How to apply

UCLA's one-year, full-time, on-campus Master of Quantum Science and
Technology professional degree program is tailored to those desiring
to pursue a career-focused, advanced degree, with a dual emphasis
on advanced study and practical skills. Admission requirements and
criteria are comparable to the ones for those applying to other
Master's programs in STEM fields.

For additional information on the admission process, please visit the UCLA Graduate Education Admissions FAQ page.

Application Deadline

We are now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 academic year. Applicants who apply by January 15, 2025 will be considered for an early admission decision. Those who are offered admission will receive their decision no later than February 15, 2025. Applicants who are not offered admission during the early decision round will be deferred to the regular decision round. The regular decision deadline is March 1, 2025. All applications received by March 1st will be fully considered for admission and funding opportunities. Applications submitted after March 1st will not be considered.

Application Checklist

Please disregard the checklist on the online application that may indicate a missing GRE score; it is not accurate. We will contact you via e-mail if there are items missing from your application.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to the online application for review purposes.

Those who are recommended for admission will be asked to submit all official transcripts with notations of their degree conferral and degree award date.

GRE scores

Students who wish to apply for admission to our graduate program for the 2024-2025 academic year are not required to take the GRE (General or Subject) or submit a GRE score report as part of their application package. However, students may voluntarily submit GRE test scores and they will be reviewed as part of our holistic application review process. The applications with GRE scores will not be given greater weight than those that do not include scores.

For the scores to match up electronically, applicants must use exactly the same personal information (name, date of birth, SSN if available) on the GRE application as on the UCLA graduate application. They must also request that official scores be sent directly to UCLA (the GRE institution code for UCLA is 4837). Applicants should submit their application by the published deadline whether or not they have received their official scores.

Letters of recommendation

Each applicant must provide three letters of recommendation; two of which must be from academic references. Applicants who have graduated three or more years from their undergraduate studies can list professional references in lieu of academic references.

The application portal allows you to list four names and their corresponding professional email addresses. Our program only requires three references. The application system will automatically prompt them to complete an evaluation and upload a letter on your behalf.

Statement of purpose

Describe your purpose in applying for graduate study at UCLA. In particular, describe the relationship between your chosen area of study and your current or future employment. Include any additional information that may aid in the evaluation of your preparation for graduate study at UCLA. Guidance from the University of California.

Personal statement

All applicants are expected to submit a personal statement (also called a history or diversity statement). Guidance from the University of California.

International applicants

When applying to a UCLA graduate program, international applicants should upload unofficial transcripts from all academic institutions they attended into the Application for Graduate Admission.

If admitted to UCLA, applicants must submit official, final academic records. For further details, please visit Graduate Division’s admissions website for International Applicants.

Students from around the world apply to UCLA’s graduate programs. You will find more specific information about our requirements for applicants from a variety of educational systems in Required Academic Records.

English Language Requirements

If your first language is not English, or if you did not receive your bachelor’s degree in an Anglophone country, you must certify proficiency in English when you apply to UCLA. This applies to U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents as well as international applicants. If you are admitted, you may also be required to confirm your proficiency upon arrival.

Submit your scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic as part of your application. The TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). IELTS Academic is administered by local IELTS test centers throughout the world. Consult IELTS for the test center nearest to your home or university.

Your test results can help you determine whether you are prepared to undertake graduate study conducted in English before making extensive plans for graduate study in the U.S.

Special note: If you studied at a satellite campus located in a country where English is not the primary spoken language of daily life, be sure to submit recent TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores. Citizenship, U.S. residence and/or work experience are not substitutes for meeting the requirement.

Please visit Graduate Division's admissions website, English Requirements, for current details on minimum IELTS & TOEFL test scores and meeting UCLA's English language requirement.
